PDB

Bismillahirrahmanirrahim.

Alhamdulillah, praise Him for His blessing for granted us the oppoturnity to learn this wonderful subject.

Protein Data Bank.

Are you familiar with it?

Have you ever heard about it?

Ok, let me share with you.

rcsb.org
It is a website which contain enormous and massive datas about structural data of large biological molecules such as protein and nucleic acid. It helps a lot for us to have better understanding in biology as it is one of the key resorce in areas of biology.

SMILES

Assalamualaikum w.b.t

Today, 16 october 2014 we learn to use simplified molecular-input line-entry system (Smiles). Smiles is related to chemsketch that we have discuss about it the other day. Smiles is a specification in form of a line notation for describing the structure of chemical molecules.  Okay ! Here is some example that  we make in our class.

Now... lets we brief you on how to use smiles.  its very simple and useful for us.

Steps                                                      Explaination    Status
Step 1  Open chemsketch. Draw the structure. DONE
Step 2 Go to tools. DONE
Step 3 Choose generate > SMILES notation DONE

We hope today's post give all of you some info about smiles then you know how to use it in the future. HAPPY TRYING !!

Trying times with ChemSketch

Assalamualaikum warahmatullah wabarakatuh.

Alhamdulillah, we meet again in our humble blog today. For today's lesson, Madam Linda has exposed us to a software named ChemSketch. It is actually a software which is commonly used in the field of chemistry.

It has the capability of drawing molecular structures and the interface design is also convenient. We had hard times in the beginning to familiarize with the tools and formats of this software. But alhamdulillah we managed to finish this assignment by referring to the ChemSketch manual uploaded in the iTaaleem.

This assignment requires us to complete six parts in six separate pages. The first part is to visualize a Energy of Reaction Diagram. We have to learn first how to make a curve. From there, we proceed to make a graph, and add to it its axis.

The second part, we have to make a p-orbital, d-orbital and pi type orbital. This part is a bit easier compared to the first part where we have to struggle with the curves and nodes. Moving on to the third part, we have made it to visualize a vacuum distillation apparatus. We were so to know how to actually draw this apparatus because for all this while, we only see it the lab manuals without knowing how to actually draw it.

Next, we learned how to make a DNA strand using this software. It can be easy if we are familiar with this software and tech savvy to complete this.
The cool DNA strand

Lastly, we formed a table containing chemistry stuffs. Pheww, after all the tribulations we face, finally we have made it! Stay tuned :)

p/s : friends, if you wish to learn in detail on using this software, kindly click this link. It has the basic tutorial of ChemSketch.

Our Journey Starts Here!

Bismillah.

All praises be to Allah for giving three of us the chance to get enrolled into this beautiful university and to pursue our studies to a higher level. At this very moment, there are a lot of other youths around the globe that actually loves knowledge, but somehow don't have the opportunity to pursue their studies because of many kinds of obstacles. Again, all praises is due to Him.

Today marks the 16th day of us being the IIUM student. It all started on the 2nd of September, the day when we officially enroll as a student here and by default, our Taaruf Week programme started. Taaruf week was good, eventhough it was a really tiring week but the eagerness inside ourselves to get to know things about this university was above that. The campus is so huge, no wonder we got so tired of walking from one destination to another. However, the landscape of this campus is just stunningly beautiful! Take a look down here...

We have six Kulliyyah here, and three of us are destined to be in the Kulliyyah of Science, the biggest 'family' in IIUM. It is located as the most distant Kulliyyah from our Mahallah that we really rushed in the morning to not miss the bus. But, sometimes we have to walk for 15 minutes under the hot blazing sun to reach here, or other places like One Stop Student Centre and the library. But we believe that it is one of our 'jihad' and challenge to walk to class, we even can get rewards from Allah in every footstep that we take if we are sincere and guard our tongues from complaining.

Kuantan is actually a nice city. A lot of shopping malls and hotspots for cheap stuffs can be found here. The day before our class starts, some of our seniors took us out around the city with their cars. Yes, you get me, the seniors here are so cool and helpful. We got to know the routes to UTC, East Coast Mall, Jungle (the heaven of food) and much much more. The very next week, we have been a bit independent that we rented a car and hit the road of Kuantan! Here is some sneak peak of Kuantan....

Our lecturers and seniors always remind us to be an active and all rounder student. They really encourage us to join clubs and societies here so that we will improve our soft skills. The abundance of knowledge programmes here makes the university more lively and merrier. This proves that the university is putting in enormous effort towards realizing the triple ICE slogan - Islamization, Integration, Internationalization and Comprehensive Excellence - a very beautiful mission it is. I wonder if I could enjoy all this in other universities.

We are aware that our first niyyah (intention) when we put in our first step in this university is extremely important. There is a words of wisdom saying, you will give up in the middle of the journey if you start on the wrong starting point. We also realize that the responsiblity of being a muslim student is to do our best in whatever field that we endeavour, so that we are able to contribute to this ummah. We are highly motivated with the saying of the Prophet (pbuh) , the best of you is the one who benefits others. Lecturers keep reminding us of the importance to score in our first two years here in order to go through the third and fourth year smoothly inshaAllah, and beyond that this is an amanah towards the knowledge itself.

As of today, we are starting to get busy with our studies, and currently doing the Computer in Science assignment in this comfortable Orchid Lab, conducted by our motherly, kind and beautiful lecturer, Dr Noraslinda. Wait for our next update on this blog. Stay tuned!
